State officials dialog on housing crisis

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – Gov. Gretchen Whitmer raised the profile of the state’s housing crisis Wednesday night during her State of the State speech.

Thursday, lawmakers increased the pressure on addressing the housing crisis with a discussion.

The Michigan State Housing Development Authority is calling the state’s lack of affordable housing a crisis. Officials say the state needs another 150,000 housing units.

But the housing people want and need are hard to find.

That’s where the state’s housing plan comes into play.

The plan anticipates 75,000 homes to be built or rehabilitated in the next five years. That number includes affordable rentals and homeowner opportunities available at market rate. It also includes housing for low-to-moderate income individuals and families as well as housing accessible and affordable for the workforce.

The plan calls on the state to reduce the population of people experiencing homelessness and increase the number of energy-efficient homes in the state.
