$500K in Spartan Strong Fund will reimburse MSU students, staff and first responders for mental health services

EAST LANSING (WWJ) — As the one-year anniversary of the deadly Michigan State University campus approaches, school officials have announced those impacted by the tragedy can now access a fund that was setup to provide them with support.

The Spartan Strong Fund received about $2 million in community donations from more than 4,200 donors in the wake of the Feb. 13, 2023 shooting that claimed the lives of three students and injured five others.

The school announced $500,000 of those donations will go to students, faculty, staff and first responders seeking reimbursement for mental health care they received in the aftermath of the shooting.  As part of this effort, University Health and Wellbeing (UHW) was designated to assist in the distribution of these mental health care services funds.

An online application for reimbursements opened on Thursday, available on the MSU website.

Insurance coverage must be met before submitting for reimbursement.

In addition to the reimbursement, the fund “will also be used for student and staff counseling, as well as recognition for those involved with the crisis, such as first responders,” according to the fund’s website.
