Bags with pot traces discovered in trash pile

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – Over two dozen bags of marijuana which appear to have been submitted for testing have been found in a trash pile near a homeless encampment.

6 News visited the trash pile and found 30 discarded plastic bags with marijuana residue in them. Each bag had a sticker with bar codes as well as unique license numbers for various marijuana businesses. The bags likely came from a testing facility.

Michigan’s marijuana laws require retail recreational and medical marijuana to be tested by independent laboratories for contaminants including mold, mildew and chemicals that may harm users.

Homeless advocate Mike Karl says the bags are being retrieved from a dumpster by the local population of the unhoused.

State rules from the Cannabis Regulatory Agency require the tested pot must be destroyed before being discarded. And when discarding the marijuana samples, it must be unrecognizable. Failing to do that could result in severe fines from the state regulatory agency.
