Portland families continue to struggle after flood

PORTLAND, Mich. (WLNS) — Some people who live in the city of Portland are trying to drain any water that remains on their property after this weekend’s flood.

As of Sunday morning, the flood warning for Portland has expired, but there’s still plenty of work to do.

While city officials said they hope things will get back to normal soon, one homeowner said that day can’t come soon enough.

“It’s a pain; it’s definitely a pain,” said Sara Colella, who lives by the river in Portland.

Colella and her husband have lived in Portland for almost a year. She said she enjoys the view of the Grand River across the road from her home, but never expected the river to be in her yard.

“It just started the other night.,” Colella said. “The fire department, fire marshal and police were knocking on everybody’s doors right here, letting us know that the river had come over the bank and that we might have to evacuate. And then we woke up the following morning and found out that the house was surrounded by [water].”
