Lansing battery plant hiring before operations

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Next year, production is expected to begin at the long-awaited Ultium Cells battery plant in Lansing. But before that, officials said they need workers to help run the $2.6 billion facility.

The joint venture between General Motors and LG Energy Solution looked to get a head start on hiring 1,700 workers through their “Talent Showcase” event.

“We’re just really excited to really showcase what battery manufacturing is all about,” Ultium Cells Lansing Plant Director Grace Griffin said.

While the 2.8 million square feet facility is still under construction, Griffin said the Capital Region was the perfect choice.

“Lansing has a strong base of manufacturing here. And so, we knew that this would be a great city to partner with. So, we’ve been partnering with all of the local community resources that have brought really great support to Ultium Cells. So, it was an original part of our decision, and it’s continuing to prove to be a great asset to the company,” she said.
