LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – With hundreds of red-tagged houses in the city and a 300 percent increase in the number of people experiencing homelessness, some Lansing residents came together to discuss the overarching concerns of housing in the city.
From bugs to water damage to mold and more, dozens shared their experiences and concerns at the gathering at The Fledge on Lansing’s eastside.
For Our Future, a grassroots organization organized the forum featuring lawmakers, advocates for the homeless and community members.
Frustrations over the city’s lack of safe affordable housing became clear throughout the two-hour event when some public comments devolved into shouting matches.
“People are going to be looking for housing as go into the future and it is going to more and more scarce, and less and less affordable,” Jerry Norris, CEO of The Fledge, tells 6 News.
Several organizations from the area, with missions to work with those who are on the verge of losing their housing and those who were already experiencing homelessness, were highlighted and available to talk with attendees about the resources they offer.
