LANSING — Some residents of an apartment building were evacuated Thursday afternoon following a carbon monoxide scare.
Lansing fire officials said an unknown number of people at the Motor Wheel Lofts, at Prudden and Saginaw streets, were evacuated after at least one carbon monoxide alarm sounded and elevated levels of the odorless, colorless gas were detected in the building.
Exhaust fans were clearing the contaminated air from the building, and residents were expected to be allowed back inside on Thursday afternoon, they said.
Assistant Lansing Fire Chief Ken Lay said the problem apparently stemmed from gasoline-powered washing equipment operating in the basement. No one got sick from breathing the fumes, he said.
It was unclear how many people were evacuated, he said.
Officials with H inc., which manages the apartments. did not immediately return a telephone message left for them on Thursday afternoon. But the company told residents in a letter that power washing in the garage caused the problem.
