LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — February is Dog Training Education Month and is a month where the importance of training a pet dog is celebrated and encouraged for all owners.
“Every month should be Dog Training Month for you at home, the most important thing you can do are going to be small sessions. Every day your dog is learning 100% of the time,” Renee Baenen, Obedience Training Club.
Baenen said dog obedience training is not just for the pets, but their owners as well.
“So a lot of people think you come to an hour-long dog training class, the dog learns and then you go home and it’s easy as that. But, really what we do for the most part during classes is we’re teaching you how to teach your dog the exercises,” Baenen said.
According to the American Kennel Club, tips for successful dog training include:
Positive reinforcement- with treats, toys or activities.
Consistency; in your reactions to your dog and giving verbal cues with the same words, tones, and body language.
Patience, and understanding your dog is learning a new language
