Mason K-9 officer without handler

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Mason Police K-9 Officer Tamarack is without a partner, and city officials are working on where to place the highly trained dog.

The city announced it will be ending its canine program Monday. This comes after the officer assigned as the handler for Tamarack resigned from Mason Police on Jan. 18, 2024. The officer was under investigation at the time of the resignation.

Mason Police leadership asked other officers in the department if they were interested in taking over responsibility for working with Tamarack, but none stepped forward.

As a result, department is reaching out to other law enforcement agencies to determine if they have room to bring the dog into their teams.

If no other law enforcement agency is located, Mason officials say they will look at adopting the dog out to a person qualified as a canine handler.
