US 127 back open north of St. Johns following crashes involving semi, police car

GREENBUSH TWP. — Both sides of U.S. 127 north of St. Johns were closed for more than two hours on Thursday following separate but related crashes involving a semi truck and a Clinton County Sheriff’s vehicle.

The semi rollover happened about 11:30 a.m. on northbound U.S. 127, north of Maple Rapids Road. The second crash occurred about 20 minutes later on the southbound side of the freeway, police said.

Michigan State Police Lt. Rene Gonzalez said a semi loaded with soybeans overturned in the northbound lanes, with some of its load spilling into the southbound side of the highway.

The second crash happened in the southbound lanes when a Clinton County Sheriff’s vehicle blocking traffic in the left lane was rear-ended by another vehicle, Gonzalez said.

A sheriff’s sergeant was inside the cruiser and suffered minor injuries, sheriff’s officials said in a news release. Four people who were riding in the other vehicle were taken to Sparrow Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The freeway was reopened around 3 p.m., the Michigan Department of Transportation said.
