MSP: Driver who slammed into deputy’s SUV near Lansing was distracted by overturned semi that spilled soybeans on US-127

(WWJ) — A Mid-Michigan sheriff’s deputy and four others have been hospitalized after a crash on the highway late Thursday morning.

It happened around 11:50 p.m. as a Clinton County deputy was working a previous crash on southbound US-127 near Maple Rapids in Greenbush Township, according to Michigan State Police.

Deputies were called to an overturned semi-truck that spilled soybeans on the highway Thursday morning roughly 30 miles north of Lansing.

As a deputy’s SUV was blocking the left lane of traffic on US-127 in the aftermath of that crash, MSP officials say the driver of a Toyota 4Runner slammed into the back of the police car.

MSP officials say the driver of the Toyota was distracted by the overturned semi and alcohol or drugs were not a factor in the secondary crash.

The deputy and driver of the Toyota were taken to the hospital, along with three passengers in the 4Runner and all were said to have suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to a report from WLNS .

“This is just another reminder to our followers that it is so important to pay attention to your driving and to not be distracted,” MSP officials said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
