Dre Cross makes history with record game for Portland bowling

Nearly a week later things still haven’t completely sunk in for Dre Cross

The feelings have been similar for his family as his mom has had non-stop tears of joy about his record achievement for the Portland boys bowling team.

Cross, a junior, made history when he set a program-record with a game of 276 against Ionia at Wagon Wheel on Friday. The game was part of a day where he rolled a 483 series and contributed to Portland setting a single-game program record with an opening game of 998.

“It’s just kind of crazy to think about that (I have the record), said Cross, who was voted the latest LSJ high school athlete of the week winner.

Cross had rolled a 207 in the opening game against Ionia while helping the Raiders bowl a 998 as a team. He was motivated to try to help Portland try to reach 1,000 as a team in the second game.

While the Raiders came up short of 1,000, that motivation led to Cross rolling the best game of his life with the 276. He threw five straight strikes to open the second game en route to the record as he exceeded his previous best game by 16 pins.
