LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – A downtown Lansing mainstay business is closing – after 49 years in business.
Linn and Owen Jewelers has been operating in the same place downtown for 49 years – but the building, 223 S. Washington Square, has played home to a jewelry store for more than 107 years.
Owner Stewart Powell, 66, says the decision was not easy but came down to wanting to enjoy time with his family.
“People I sold engagement rings to almost 50 years ago are bringing their grandkids and their great-grandkids in here,” he says. “So, I’ve been here a long time.”
Generations of Mid-Michigan families have bought watches, rings and other fine jewelry from the business. But that tradition will cease when March ends.
“I’m getting up there in age,” he says. “My eyes. It’s just tough. My hands don’t work like they used to. I don’t have the stamina that I used to have. It’s hard to work 6 days a week anymore when you get to my age. So, I just thought it’s best to do it when I can – instead of when I have to.”
