Woman reflects on 7 years on the streets of Lansing

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — For the last year and a half, Robin Nolan has been camping out in the woods in Lansing. But two weeks ago, a flood from the melting snow came rushing in, destroying most of her belongings.

“All the water, right where the end of these two trees right here meet, is how high the water was up,” said Nolan. And it’s not just a recent experience for her–Nolan has been unhoused on and off for the last 7 years.

It’s been a tough life for Nolan–growing up in the foster care system, struggling with addiction and then finding herself on the streets of Lansing.

“I was one of the ones that went out during the day, did what I had to do, get stuff like food and stuff to share with everybody at the campsite,” said Nolan. “Came back, gathered up wood, cleaned up the campsite, started making a fire.”

In more than a year at the homeless camp, Nolan built lifetime bonds with the people she was staying with. But living on the streets is a tough task, with the recent flood as a testament.
