Eaton County, Michigan, is now part of a Presidential Disaster Declaration due to severe storms, tornadoes, and flooding from August 24-26, 2023. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) stated that federal disaster aid is now accessible to the state for recovery in the impacted areas. The extreme weather caused road and bridge closures, damage to buildings and roads, and residential flooding.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer requested the disaster declaration in response to the severe weather aftermath. The storms, which included heavy rain, strong winds, and seven tornadoes, caused extensive damage in lower Michigan. The declaration will aid these communities in their recovery efforts.

Federal funding is now accessible to individuals and businesses in nine Michigan counties. This funding can cover temporary housing, home repairs, uninsured property losses, and other recovery needs. There is also cost-sharing funding for hazard mitigation measures statewide.

Eaton County residents who suffered losses can apply for assistance online, by phone, or through the FEMA App. Eaton County Emergency Management is coordinating local, state, and federal communication throughout this process.
