SEBEWA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — One person was killed in a Sunday evening crash involving a stolen vehicle in Sebewa Township.
Around 4:15 p.m., deputies with the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office were sent to the Ionia Walmart and the Ionia Menards for separate reports of vehicles that were stolen from the parking lot.
Deputies learned that five people from the Lansing area had possibly stolen a vehicle from another jurisdiction and drove that vehicle to Walmart, where they stole another vehicle. They then went to Menards and stole a second vehicle.
The information was shared with surrounding counties, the sheriff’s office said. Shortly after the alert, deputies in Clinton County reported that they had found the stolen vehicles. Those deputies attempted to stop the vehicles, which took off, beginning a police chase through Clinton, Eaton and Ionia Counties.
The sheriff’s office said one of the vehicles was stopped by spike strips.
The other vehicle, a 2020 Kia Forte, lost control heading northbound on Sunfield Highway near Bippley Road and hit a tree.
