LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Potter Park Zoo in Lansing announced the birth of three otters last Friday.
According to the zoo , their mother is Nkeke – a North American river otter who has already given birth to three litters. This new litter is also her second set of triplets.
The otter pups have been nursing and appear to be healthy at this time.
At birth, the pups weighed in at 113 grams, 109 grams, and 96 grams. Or as the zoo points out – about the same weight as a deck of playing cards.
“Triplets can be demanding for otter mothers,” noted Potter Park Zoo’s Director of Animal Health, Dr. Ronan Eustace. “We’re cautiously optimistic that Nkeke will be able to care for all three without the need for veterinary intervention.”
Nkeke, the mother, shares her habitat with Miles, the father of the otter pups, who was born at the zoo in 2013.
