Homelessness agency: ‘You can help us’

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – A local homelessness agency facing tax problems with the IRS took to Facebook Wednesday night pleading for assistance from the community.

“You can help us weather this perfect storm of low housing stocks and a shaky economy,” said Susan Cancro, executive director of Advent House Ministries.

6 News reported exclusively Wednesday the agency was facing a tax bill from the IRS – a fact Cancro confirmed in her Facebook video. But she told social media viewers the debt was not insurmountable.

“We do owe the IRS back taxes,” she said. “But the fact of the matter is, like many other local businesses we’re waiting for our Employee Retention Credit – and this credit will more than offset our debt to the IRS.”

The Employee Retention Credit is a federal tax credit for businesses that lost income or had their operations severely curtailed as a result of COVID restrictions. The IRS may credit eligible businesses up to $10,000 for each employee who worked through the restrictions and attending economic stresses.
