Driver rescued after driving into river in Eaton Rapids

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — A 43-year-old woman was taken to the Eaton County Jail after being rescued from the Grand River in Eaton Rapids Tuesday afternoon.

Officials in Eaton Rapids say a call from Eaton County Dispatch went out shortly before 2 p.m. for a car in the river at East Broad St. and Water St.

While en route officials were notified a citizen had taken a small row boat and retrieved the female driver from the water. However, when Eaton Rapids Police Department officials and an EMT from Eaton Area EMS arrived, the would-be rescuer driver and the rowboat were stuck in the current.

Those two officials “commandeered” a canoe and safely guided the rowboat, citizen rescuer, and the driver from the river.

The female driver “was transported to Eaton Rapids Medical Center for evaluation and later lodged at the Eaton County Jail. Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in this incident. The investigation is ongoing,” officials wrote in a news release.

The car was retrieved from the river with the assistance of the Capital Area Dive Team and DuroTech towing.
