Deputies: Teen dead after police chase ends in crash

CASTLETON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities say a 16-year-old died when a police chase ended in a crash in Barry County.

The Barry County Sheriff’s Office said the crash happened shortly before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday on Coats Grove Road near M-66 in Castleton Township, south of Woodland.

Michigan State Police said the chase started when deputies tried to pull over the driver for excessive speed. The driver did not stop and sped away. The chase ended when the driver went off the roadway and struck several trees at a high rate of speed, according to MSP.

The driver, a 16-year-old Woodland area boy, was ejected from the vehicle. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the sheriff’s office.

His name has not been released.

State police said it’s unknown if alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.

MSP is investigating the crash.
