Lansing declares ‘Code Red’ heat advisory, extends cooling center hours

LANSING — The city’s four community centers will be open longer this week to give people places to cool off during an extended heat wave, officials said.

The Foster, Gier, Letts and Alfreda Schmidt community centers will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. to serve as cooling centers, although all but the Letts center will be closed Wednesday for the Juneteenth holiday.

“Finding a place to get out of the heat can be a challenge for some of our residents,” Mayor Andy Schor said in a news release announcing a “Code Red” emergency heat advisory. “Lansing has several options available and we encourage anyone who needs a cool place to relax to take advantage of these locations.”

Other options to stay cool are Capital Area District Library branches, the Neighborhood Empowerment Center and the CATA Transportation Center, city officials said.

The Hunter Park Pool is a place to go swimming, and Ingham County Parks will waive vehicle entrance fees at all County parks, including Hawk Island County Park on the city’s southside, which includes a beach and splash pad.
