City of Lansing unveils new ‘LANSING’ sign

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — You’ve seen the Hollywood sign. Detroit also has one to welcome tourists—and now, so does Lansing.

The City of Lansing revealed its new sign this Monday afternoon. Each letter of the six-foot sign was designed by a different artist.

The project was made possible with funding from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and the Community Economic Development Association.

The artists say they were given only a few weeks to work on their projects, and each artist used a unique design to represent Lansing’s people, places, and spirit.

Teresa Dunn, a painter and professor at Michigan State University, says she used her own students as inspiration for her art.

She was assigned to work on the letter “A”.

“A large part of my painting is dedicated to painting women of color, and I thought I wanted to represent a diverse, young, strong woman in my letter,” said Dunn.

Jasmyne Wells, a painter, says she focused her letter “N” on lived experiences she and her family had while growing up in Lansing.
