LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – A new CBS News analysis found foodborne illnesses have increased 42% since 2013 in regions the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention monitors.
We can’t always control what happens outside of our home, but inside, we can take preventative measures to avoid foodborne illnesses, starting in the kitchen.
Experts say leaving food uncovered can cause bacteria to grow, which could make you sick. They also recommend color-coding your chopping boards to prevent cross-contamination.
When you’re cooking, food safety experts say it’s critical to make sure you cook foods to the right internal temperatures – 165 degrees for poultry and 145 degrees for beef, pork, and veal. The USDA also says to let it rest for at least three minutes.
