LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Opening gifts on Christmas morning is always a joy — except when the gift isn’t exactly what you want.
Nowadays, many gifts come prepared with return labels and gift receipts. Still, Attorney General Dana Nessel reminds residents to check return policies before heading to the store as a part of her ‘Holiday Scam Campaign’.
“Return policies vary greatly from store to store, but almost all impose a time limit on returns,” Nessel said. “If you know you will return an item you received this holiday season, don’t wait, and review the store’s return policy before making the trip.”
Nessel says the best way to avoid an unhappy return is to know the return policy before making a purchase and to look for the return policies at a cash register or online.
People shopping online should check the return policies as well, says Nessel. If the return policies are not clearly posted online, then you should be cautious about purchases.
Lastly, Nessel says if a store refuses to return items by a store clerk, ask to speak to a manager. You can file a complaint if the store does not honor its return policy. Call your credit card and dispute the charges.
