LANSING — While demolition continues at the historic Eastern High School, so do the calls for preservation of some of the historic school’s artifacts, including a cupola on the roof.
On Thursday, officials from University of Michigan Health-Sparrow confirmed the cupola could not be saved. UM Health-Sparrow is razing the building the hospital system acquired in 2016 to make way for a new pyschiatric hospital.
“As you know, we are saving a number of artifacts from Eastern, including the original cornerstone, stone arch, chandeliers, historic light fixtures, auditorium seating, bricks and more,” spokesperson John Foren said in a statement. “We took special steps this morning to try to retrieve the cupola but it was in such poor condition that it was not salvageable.”…
