The tail of Big Lots bankruptcy and the steady drip of “Going Out of Business” sales, which were followed by the announcement of the closure of another Michigan location, began back in September 2024, when the discount retailer filed for bankruptcy and began closing stores in the Mitten State.
Fast-forward to today and every location has been shuttered or is in the midst of its own “Going Out of Business” sale, despite Variety Wholesales Inc. purchasing 200 and announcing its intentions to relaunch the brand in February. However, a recent Facebook post (see below) and updates on the official website give hope that we will soon see at least five Big Lots reopen in Michigan.
Big Lots’ Big Comeback in Michigan Isn’t Happening at Every Location
Sadly, odd international snacks won’t be available at every closed location. Gordon Brothers, the company that originally bailed out Big Lots, retains ownership of 23 stores and is selling off the leases, many of which have five-plus years left.
You can see the list of Gordon Brothers in Michigan leases by clicking here, though I imagine more than one of them will be a Spirit Halloween location when the season rolls around. Of course, Michigan has a wide selection of vacant Rite Aids to choose from as well.
