Onondaga Dragway offers alternative to street racing

ONONDAGA TWP., Mich. (WLNS) — As Lansing officials are working to create a comprehensive response to what they call “reckless driving” and street racing, the owner of the Sloan Onondaga Dragway is inviting street racers to race legally.

“I would love to have them out here,” Woody Sloan, owner of the 1/8 mile track about 24 miles from Lansing. A text message from city spokesman Scott Bean says Lansing Mayor Andy Schor is “supportive” of Sloan’s invitation.

City officials in Lansing are struggling to find solutions to illegal street racing in the city. The issue became more urgent on April 24 when police say two vehicles racing south on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Lansing were involved in a five-vehicle crash. The crash sent 13 people to local hospitals , ranging in age from 3 to 52. One of those, a 15-year-old, died of his crash-related injuries Tuesday afternoon, officials confirmed.

Sloan, 79, has owned the 70-acre property since 2021 but had dreamed of owning the property for decades.

He tells 6 News he first saw the asphalt strip and property in the early 90s, and immediately thought the property would make a “great” raceway. He drove past it again in 2013, but something had changed – there was now an active raceway on the property…
