Man convicted of killing Bath Township hunter asks court for retrial

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — The Clinton County Circuit Court held a hearing Wednesday, where a man who was found guilty of killing a Bath Township hunter in 2018 made his case for a retrial.

At around 10 p.m. on Nov. 16, 2018, the body of Chon Yang was found at the Rose Lake State Park by his family. He was a frequent hunter at the park, and his wife grew concerned when he did not return home.

Police say the family found his body after following two sets of footprints from his car, which was found in a parking lot nearby.

Yang’s family kept his case in the news for years, with the help of an online campaign called Orange Justice, but the case remained unsolved. Five years later, police finally made an arrest in the case, and while charges were ultimately dropped against one suspect, a jury convicted a second man, Thomas Olson, of second-degree murder and felony firearm.

He was sentenced to 24 years in prison for second-degree murder last September. Now, Olson claims he didn’t have effective legal representation in his initial trial, and is requesting a new one…
