Behind the scenes at the MSU Recycling Center ahead of the busy student move out weekend

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS)– Michigan State University’s Recycling Center is preparing for one of its busiest weekends of the year as students move out for the summer.

Chris Hewitt, MSU’s Surplus and Recycling Operations Coordinator, says the Center typically takes in 25 million pounds of waste annually, 6 million pounds of which become recycled cardboard, bottles, paper, and other items.

MSU employs four students to help sort through all of the recyclable materials as they come off the conveyor belt. The process is intensive and, with such a large community, they send off approximately one semi-truckload of batched cardboard every four days and baled plastic water bottles every two months in addition to other recyclables…
