Mid-Michigan law enforcement participates in mental health crisis training

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Statistics show that many of the calls police receive do not deal with crime—instead, many of them deal with mental health concerns and other issues.

Now, Mid-Michigan law enforcement officers are expanding their training to help with mental health crises—by taking part in a list of scenarios that range from domestic disputes to severe agitation at a training on Friday.

At the Wriggelsworth Training Center and Ingham County Sheriff’s Office Friday, officers and deputies trained for a variety of situations involving a number of mental health and substance abuse crises.

“90% that they go to are not crime related, it’s some sort of a crisis or that could be mental health related, substance abuse related, or just situational,” said Melissa Misner, Tri-County CIT Coordinator…
