Audit exposes security flaws in Michigan prisons, prompting review discussions

IONIA COUNTY, Mich. — A recent audit uncovered significant security lapses at three state prisons, including two in Ionia County, according to a report released by Michigan’s Office of the Auditor General.

The nonpartisan review found that more than one-third of documented cell searches never actually occurred, based on surveillance video evidence examined during the audit period.

Auditors also discovered that approximately 30% of inmates were not properly subjected to pat-down searches or metal detector screenings. The auditors said this could create opportunities for contraband to move throughout the facilities…
