Tragic UTV Crash Claims Life of Durand Teen

There are countless ways to soak in a Michigan summer—fishing, hiking, boating, camping, or even hitting the trails on four-wheelers and UTVs. But sadly, what should’ve been a fun outdoor ride in Shiawassee County ended in tragedy.

What Happened in Vernon Township?

On Friday afternoon in Vernon Township, three teens were riding a side-by-side utility terrain vehicle when disaster struck. A 15-year-old was behind the wheel, accompanied by two 14-year-olds. Around 12:40 p.m., as they approached the intersection of Reed Road and Pittsburg, the UTV veered off the road and flipped.

According to the Shiawassee County Sheriff’s Office, 14-year-old Carter Brent Jones was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. As news of the tragedy made it through the city, Durand area residents are mourning the loss of Carter Jones.

The driver and the other passenger were taken to a nearby hospital. Their current conditions have not been released. Authorities are continuing to investigate the accident.

Carter, born in Grand Blanc in 2010, had just wrapped up his freshman year at Durand High School. He loved spending time outdoors—hunting, fishing, riding dirt bikes—and was even an aspiring beekeeper who proudly maintained his own hives…
