LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Employees at Michigan State University are bracing for impact after the university announced more than 100 layoffs due to SNAP-ED funding cuts.
6 News spoke to an MSU Extension employee, Stathis Pauls, who says the jobs at risk are Community Nutrition Instructors (CNIs), who were funded by SNAP-ED.
‘Tightening the reins’: MSU to lay off more employees
As the university prepares to lose $10.5 million in its annual funding for its SNAP-ED program, Pauls says he is worried about what’s to come.
“We don’t have an exact number,” said Pauls. “We’re still trying to figure that out, but it could be anywhere from 90 to 120 employees, and that’s roughly, if not more than a quarter of the extension’s employee base.”
