LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — After multiple locations in Lansing’s Old Town neighborhood were vandalized with Nazi graffiti, area businesses are planning to band together to raise funds for local non-profits with a “late night” shopping event.
This Thursday, Aug. 21, multiple Old Town businesses will be donating part of the night’s profits to various organizations in Michigan.
- Odd Nodd Art Apply will be donating 25%, Bad Annie’s will donate 20%, and Twiggies will be donating 10% of their sales to Safe & Just Michigan, a organization whose goal is to reduce any harms caused by the criminal legal system.
- Seams Sewing and Mercantile will contribute 25% of its sales to the Refugee Development Center, a support organization for Mid-Michigan refugees.
According to Casey Sorrow, owner of Odd Nodd Art Supply, one of the businesses vandalized in the incident, the event is meant to be a “show of unity,” and a “direct response” to the vandalism incident, which saw multiple businesses spray-painted with racist and homophobic iconography and remarks.
“The late-night event offers the community an opportunity to send the message that such hate will not be tolerated here; giving community members a chance to support local organizations doing critical social justice work, while also supporting local small businesses in one of Lansing’s most diverse and inclusive neighborhoods,” wrote Sorrow in a release obtained by 6 News…
