LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – Schools in Michigan are still waiting for the spending budget that was supposed to pass by July 1st. Because of the delay, Okemos Public Schools has already announced changes to its free meal program and some are worried other districts may have to do the same.
State and local officials served lunch at Riddle Elementary in the Lansing School District Tuesday to highlight why they say including free meals in the budget is a top priority.
“It’s just wonderful to see them eat, see them eat healthy, eat some of the fruit, some of the food,” said Lansing Mayor Andy Schor. “They love it.”
The meals they served were free lunches. Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist says the point of the visit was to highlight the importance of free lunch programs that may be at risk in this year’s budget.
“Kids should not have to have any question in their mind or in their hearts about what they’re gonna eat in a given day, and we can provide that in Michigan,” said Gilchrist. “We’ve done that for the last two years, and it’s laying a strong foundation.”…
