Lansing finalizes deal to limit retirees’ health premiums

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — The City of Lansing has reached an agreement with retired firefighters to cap their health care contributions at 5% of total cost after a legal review signaled steep premium increases of dozens of former employees.

Mayor Andy Schor announced the deal with 65 retirees who left city service between 2014 and 2021, saying the goal was to help retirees while staying within the law.

“We wanted to make sure that we could do something legally, with the contracts still remaining, while still recognizing that the city had also made some errors,” he said.

The city said the spike stemmed from how prior agreements were interpreted during a legal review. Those contracts were signed during Mayor Virg Bernero’s administration. Under the new agreement, retirement contributions will be capped at 5% going forward, and the city will issue refunds for any payments made since July 1 related to the higher amounts…
