Whitmer, Rice urges schools to continue free meals despite budget in flux

LANSING, Mich. (WBUP/WJMN) — Update: Administrators at Marquette Area Public Schools (MAPS) met to pass contingency plans for their student meal program in line with the governor and state superintendent’s direction.

MAPS Superintendent Zack Sedgwick alerted families in the district that the board passed a motion to temporarily fund universal free breakfast and lunch to all students, regardless of income, starting Wednesday, Oct. 1, through the end of the first school quarter (ending Nov. 7).

He wrote that there are two ways to go forward:

  • If the state budget funds a universal free breakfast and lunch program, MAPS will cease general fund support for meals and submit for full state reimbursement.
  • If the state budget does NOT include a universal free breakfast and lunch program, the district will immediately authorize continued general fund support for meals through Nov. 7. On Nov. 10, the district will cease general fund support and revert to the meal pricing structure and policy in place prior to the start of the state-funded program.

Sedgwick encourages all families to complete the annual Nutrition and Education Benefits Form in order to be prepared for any outcome. The form determines a student’s eligibility for free or reduced-price meals, should the program not be renewed…
