Ovid Township Issues Temporary Burn Ban Amid Dry, Breezy Stretch

Ovid Township, just issued a temporary burn ban, so if you live in Clinton County, you may want to take note.

The Ovid-Middlebury Fire Department is asking that all open burning be taken off the table at this time, including brush piles, yard debris, and the typical fall clean-up burns. They’re also discouraging campfires and backyard fire pits until we get some rain relief.

There is no word yet at this time as to when the ban will be lifted.

Why the Burn Ban Is in Place

With the stretch of warm, dry, and breezy days that we’ve had, it has caused some people to turn heads in concern. Fire crews would probably not like to spend their Sunday chasing down embers across fence lines, and your neighbors may appreciate that too.

What You Could Do Instead of Lighting Fires

  • Bag or compost leaves and small branches
  • Delay any burn-barrel plans, even if it is just a small fire
  • If you absolutely must grill, a hose should be kept nearby, or until it is cold out.
  • Double-check your trailer chains and don’t toss cigarette butts.
