17th century book found in MSU donation bin

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The people who help run the Michigan State University Surplus Store come across thousands of donated books each month. Every once in a while, they come across a big find, butfew like one donated last year.

The store has received some iconic first editions and plenty of signed copies, including a bowhunting guide from Michigan’s own Ted Nugent. But a find from last October takes the cake: The Surplus Store received a 17th century copy of a theology book written in Latin by an Austrian philosopher.

Chris Hewitt, the store’s operations coordinator, told News 8 that his staff regularly sorts through lots of donations.

“We collect books daily and we have two full-time staff members along with a team of students whose job it is to go through and hand sort all of those books,” Hewitt explained. “It’s about 20,000 pounds of books a month that they hand sort. They’re going through those bins, and they have a whole process of sorting them out based on their condition and then from their value and what type of category book they are.”…
