LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Lansing School District will accept part of Michigan’s $321 million in school safety and student mental health funding, even as more than 30 districts and intermediate school districts challenge the grant’s requirements in court.
The grants were created after years of debate following the 2021 mass shooting at Oxford High School. Lawmakers approved the funding this fall to help schools hire mental health professionals, add school resource officers and upgrade security systems.
At issue is a provision that requires districts opting into Section 31aa of the School Aid Act to “waive any privilege that may otherwise protect information from disclosure in the event of a mass casualty event.” Plaintiffs argue the language is vague and unconstitutional…
