Tribe takes action to honor Civil War soldiers after state delays highway memorial sign

LEELANAU COUNTY, Mich,. (WPBN/WGTU) – – The legislative process in Lansing has been slow to recognize the contributions of Native American soldiers from the Civil War, but Scott Schwander and the tribal council have taken matters into their own hands.

Schwander, a sign advocate, has been working to ensure the legacy of his ancestors, who served in the first Michigan Sharpshooters Company K, is not forgotten.

“It hits close to home, they were family we never met,” Schwander said. “I had a great-grand great-great-grandfather and his brother both enlisted in the first Michigan Sharpshooters Company K.”…
