Care Free Medical building red-tagged by City of Lansing

LANSDING, Mich. (WLNS) — Nonprofit organization Care Free Medical has served the underinsured and uninsured in the greater Lansing area for more than seven years. Now they’re being forced to evacuate after their former office building was red tagged this week.

Employees showed up to work Monday to an office with burst pipes and standing water filling the library.

“There was water in the stairwell there was water on the 5th floor where we were before, pouring on the inside where our medical assistants used to sit and they told me that the ceilings had fallen in up there was all over our equipment so it’s a mess,” said Danielle Hill, the organization’s COO.

The non-profit used to be headquartered at 1100 E Saginaw St in Lansing, but according to Hill, ever since ownership of the building changed four years ago, conditions in the building have been steadily deteriorating ever since.

“It was bad before. So, we didn’t have heat in the winter. We didn’t have air in the summer. It was 90° in the office in the summer. The elevators have been down, I would say, for greater than six months,” she said. “It’s not ideal and it’s not safe. So, silver lining is we needed to get out of there. The sad part is we’re leaving with nothing, so we’re starting over.”…
