HOUGHTON, Mich. (WBUP/WJMN) — Jacob Kempainen, 22, pleaded guilty for his role in the 2023 murder of his grandfather, Alvin, and faces a minimum sentence of up to 15 years in prison, announced Houghton County Prosecutor Dan Helmer.
“This plea offer was made after lengthy discussions with investigators, a careful evaluation of the evidence, and in consultation with multiple family members of the victim, Alvin Kempainen,” Helmer explained.
In exchange for Jacob’s guilty plea to second degree murder, his open murder, conspiracy, and firearm charges will be dismissed. His co-defendent and mother, Margaret Kempainen, has not entered a guilty plea and anticipates a 2026 jury trial…
