OWOSSO, Mich. (WLNS) – Amid the inhospitable weather Mid-Michigan has been facing this month, a new shelter is opening in Owosso on Jan. 12.
Hope Works Mid-Michigan, formerly the Gratiot County Hope House, is expanding to Shiawassee County to run the shelter. Since October, the nonprofit has tracked 15 people in the county in need of housing assistance, but they estimate that the actual number is four times larger.
“It’s easy in a county like Shiawassee to presume that the homeless aren’t here because we don’t necessarily see them on a street corner with signs or like some of those pictures we see in the media,” said Hope Works Mid-Michigan Director of Operations, Jake Gregory. “Homelessness is real.
