City of Portland cautions residents about potential flooding

PORTLAND, Mich. (WLNS) – The city of Portland is asking homeowners to be aware of the risk of potential flooding on Grand River.

With rain and warmer than usual weather in the forecast, the city says a few buildings near the river are already seeing some water in their basements. City Manager Andrew Dymczyk stressed that any flooding right now is minor, but they are monitoring the situation closely.

Any flooding in Portland calls to mind the last major flood in February 2019, when 50 homes had to be evacuated. Dymczyk says the current water levels are nowhere near that high, but several sections of the Portland River Trail are flooded, including near Thompson Field and Two Rivers Park.

He adds that even though the flooding is not a major cause for concern, any time we see a thaw like this week, the city likes to give residents the heads up.

“Yesterday was really more of an awareness, and again if there were other residents adjacent to the Grand River who did not have flooding, we want to make them aware so they can make the proper precautions to protect their property as well as their safety,” Dymczyk said…
