Defendant in 2021 killing of 16-year-old Lansing student to be resentenced

LANSING — An appeals panel has ordered resentencing for a man convicted of murdering a 16-year-old Lansing boy in 2021.`

The state Court of Appeals affirmed Deshown Clark Jr.’s convictions of first-degree felony murder and felony firearm possession in the death of Darrell Smith, who was a junior at Sexton High School. But it said Clark deserved to be resentenced because his trial attorney failed to submit a report about mitigating factors.

Clark, who was 18 at the time of the shooting, was convicted following a jury trial and sentenced to 40 to 80 years in prison on the murder charge by Eaton County Circuit Judge Janice Cunningham in July 2023…
