Where to Find Paczki in Lansing This Fat Tuesday

The Lenten season will soon be upon us. That means that Fat Tuesday and Paczki are right around the corner too!

What Is Fat Tuesday?

Fat Tuesday (which is February 17 this year) is the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday — when the Lent season begins for Catholics. During Lent, Catholics fast and/or ‘give up’ certain foods or activities. A popular example of something would be ‘giving up sweets’.

So, as kind of a last hurrah to make use of all the butter, sugar, and sweets left in the pantry, Fat Tuesday and Paczki were born.

Paczki are Polish pastries that are deep-fried; filled with jelly, cream, or custard, and dusted with a light coating of powdered sugar.

And don’t mistake it for some regular jelly-filled donut either; they are not the same…
