‘Big spectacle’: City grant leads to Old Town art installation

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – If you’ve driven down Cedar Street in Old Town Lansing, you’ve probably noticed the eye-catching art installation that sits along the fence of what used to be just a pile of scrap metal. It’s the result of a $75,000 grant from the City of Lansing’s 2025 Arts Impact Project.

“We’ve certainly transformed from the old junkyard that people looked at as ‘We’re noisy, we’re dirty,” to now, ‘We’re recyclers.’ We help preserve resources and we’re into art and doing parts in our community, especially Old Town Lansing,” said John Lancour.

The corner of Cedar and Maple in Old Town has been home to Friedland Industries since the late 1800’s. As the Executive VP, Lancour has seen a lot of change on the street corner over the years, but nothing quite like the new installation.

“It’s kind of a big spectacle that you don’t really quite know why it’s there,” said Moe Ferland.
