LANSING, (Mich.) WLNS — Some in East Lansing accused the city of being cruel to its homeless population at Tuesday night’s city council meeting in response to a proposed new ordinance, Ordinance 1566, that would ban camping in any public space in the city.
In around three hours of public comment, many residents and advocates took to the podium, telling the council why they should drop the ordinance, which would ban camping in any public spaces in the city, something those speakers told the council would be unfair to the homeless population.
“If you don’t want to see homeless people, house them,” said Sean Brock, who represented Rent is Too Damn High. “When you criminalize, I will go to my quote, ‘When survival becomes illegal, we no longer live in the land of the free.’ This is a cruel ordinance.”…
