Lansing extends shelter hours, activates code blue weather plan

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Lansing is activating its Code Blue weather plan this weekend as dangerously cold temperatures move in, opening extra warming centers and extending shelter hours for people who need a safe place to stay.

Mayor Andy Schor, working with the Lansing Fire Department’s Emergency Management Division and the Department of Human Relations & Community Services, said the plan takes effect at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, 2026, and will run overnight each night through 7 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2026.

Under Code Blue, Lansing’s Letts Community Center will operate as an overnight warming center from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. each night. The Capital Area Transportation Authority (CATA) will also run a warming bus 24 hours a day along Route 1 during the activation period…
